What's actually growing inside a dirty aircon?
Mould, mildew, bacteria, and a biofilm of dust and skin cells that binds it all to the coil and fan barrel. In FNQ heat and humidity, the fan barrel of a split system is essentially a warm, damp incubator.
When you switch the unit on, the fan blows air through that layer and out into the room. That's where the musty smell comes from, and it's why the air can feel stale even when the unit is running.
Can a dirty aircon affect the air my family breathes?
Mould and microbial contamination in an indoor unit may aggravate symptoms for sensitive people — particularly anyone with asthma or allergies. It isn't something we can diagnose, and health questions belong with your GP, but removing the mould and biofilm from the unit removes one possible source in the room.

Why does a dirty coil make the system work harder?
The compressor is the hungriest part of a split system, and anything that keeps it running longer uses more power.
When the evaporator coil is coated in biofilm, air can't move through it properly. The unit blows less cold air and the room takes longer to reach temperature, so the system runs for longer to get there. Restoring airflow can help the unit reach temperature sooner. How much that changes your bill depends on the unit, the house and how you run it — I'm not going to put a number on it.
Does servicing affect how long a unit lasts?
Lifespan varies substantially by installation, use, brand, environment and maintenance, so anyone quoting you exact years is guessing. What I'll say from experience is that the units that fail early up here are usually the ones running hot and choked with dirt, or sitting in salt air with a corroded outdoor coil.
Regular cleaning and servicing won't stop all corrosion or rule out a compressor failure — nothing does. It does mean the system is running with the airflow it was designed for, and it means problems get spotted while they're still small. On a unit that cost a couple of thousand dollars installed, that's reasonable upkeep.
Why is coastal corrosion a bigger deal in Mission Beach?
Salt-laden air pulls moisture out of the atmosphere and holds it against the aluminium fins of the outdoor coil. Over time it eats the fins away and corrodes the copper joints.
I've seen outdoor coils within a few hundred metres of the beach where the fins have gone to powder. A proper annual clean includes rinsing and treating the outdoor coil, checking electrical connections for green corrosion, and treating exposed metal. It won't stop salt attacking a unit altogether, but on coastal homes it clears the salt film off regularly instead of letting it sit there for years. How often should I get a professional aircon clean in Mission Beach?
In FNQ humidity, every 12 months minimum. If you're within a kilometre of the beach, have pets, or run the unit hard through the wet season, every 6–9 months is more realistic.
What does a professional clean actually involve?
A hydro-chemical wash of the evaporator coil and fan barrel indoors, a full clean of the outdoor coil, a drain flush, filter clean, and a check of electricals and airflow. It takes about 60–90 minutes on a standard split.
Can I do it myself instead?
You can wash the filter yourself and you should. But the mould lives on the fan barrel and deep in the coil fins, and getting those clean without pulling the unit apart isn't realistic. A can of coil spray from Bunnings doesn't reach where the problem is.
Will a clean fix my musty smell?
Usually it helps a lot, because the musty smell normally comes from mould and biofilm on the fan barrel and coil. Cleaning removes those common sources. If a smell hangs around afterwards, something else needs diagnosing — a blocked drain, damp insulation or moisture in the wall cavity.
