Aircon Not Blowing Cold Air? Your Mission Beach Repair Guide
The most common causes of a split system that runs but won't cool — and how we fix them fast right across the Cassowary Coast.
It's 34°C outside, the humidity is sitting at 85%, and the split system in the lounge is running flat out — but the air coming out is barely cool. Sound familiar? In Mission Beach and across the Cassowary Coast, this is one of the most common calls we take, especially heading into the wet season.
Here's what's actually going on inside your unit, what you can safely check yourself, and when it's time to book a local tech.
The Six Most Common Causes in FNQ
- Dirty filter or clogged evaporator coil — the number one culprit in tropical Queensland. Airflow drops and cooling collapses.
- Frozen indoor coil — ice on the copper pipes means the coil can't transfer heat. Usually caused by low airflow or low gas.
- Low refrigerant from a small leak — the unit runs but can't extract heat properly. Common on older installs near the coast.
- Failed capacitor on the outdoor unit — the fan spins but the compressor won't kick in. You'll hear a hum but no cold air.
- Blocked or overgrown outdoor unit — vines, cane trash and leaf litter smother the condenser and stop it dumping heat.
- Wrong remote setting — sounds silly, but 'Fan', 'Dry' or a temperature setting above room temp all produce warm air.
Quick Checks You Can Safely Do Yourself
Before you book, run through this 5-minute checklist:
- Set the remote to Cool (snowflake) at 22°C or lower.
- Pop the front panel of the indoor unit and check the filters — if they're grey with dust, wash them out.
- Walk outside and confirm the condenser (outdoor box) is running and the fan is spinning.
- Clear anything within 60cm of the outdoor unit — leaves, garden growth, storage.
- Check your switchboard for a tripped breaker.
If cool air still won't come through after all that, the problem is inside the sealed refrigeration circuit or the electrics — and that's a licensed job.

Why FNQ Aircons Lose Cooling Faster Than Most
Cassowary Coast homes ask more of their split systems than almost anywhere in Australia. High humidity means the evaporator is constantly wet, which attracts dust, salt and mould into a thick biofilm on the coil. Once that layer forms, the coil can't transfer heat and cooling drops off — even though the compressor is working perfectly.
That's why the first thing we do on a "not cooling" call in Mission Beach or Tully is check the coil. Nine times out of ten a proper hydro-chemical clean restores full cooling without any parts needing replacement.
When It's Actually a Refrigerant or Electrical Fault
Some symptoms point to something beyond a clean:
- Ice visibly forming on the indoor copper pipework
- A hissing or bubbling noise from the indoor unit
- The outdoor fan spins but the compressor stays silent
- Cooling drops off after 10-15 minutes then never recovers
- The unit trips the safety switch when it tries to cool
These need a licensed technician with gauges and a leak detector. We diagnose on the spot, quote before we start, and — if the repair makes sense — get you cooling again the same visit.
Repair or Replace?
Most "no cool air" calls are worth repairing. Replacement only makes sense when:
- The unit is over 10 years old and out of warranty
- The compressor has failed (typically a $1,200+ repair)
- The refrigerant is R22 (phased out — recharging isn't allowed)
- The estimated repair is more than half the cost of a new install
If replacement is on the cards, see our installation guide for what's involved, or read our clean, repair or replace decision guide to work out the right call for your unit.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my aircon running but not blowing cold air?
The most common causes in Far North Queensland are a clogged filter or dirty evaporator coil restricting airflow, low refrigerant from a small leak, a frozen coil, or a faulty capacitor stopping the outdoor compressor from starting. A licensed technician can identify the cause in a single visit.
What can I check myself before calling a technician?
Confirm the remote is set to Cool (snowflake) and 22°C or lower, check the filter is clean, make sure the outdoor unit is running and not blocked by leaves or vines, and check your switchboard hasn't tripped. If cool air still won't come through, it's time for a professional diagnosis.
How much does it cost to repair an aircon that isn't cooling in Mission Beach?
A hydro-chemical clean starts at $120 and fixes most airflow-related cooling problems. Component repairs like capacitors or fan motors are quoted after the initial diagnosis so you always see the price before we start.
Can I still use my aircon if it isn't cooling properly?
No. Running a split system that isn't cooling wastes power and can damage the compressor if the coil is frozen or refrigerant is low. Turn it off at the wall until it's been inspected.
How quickly can you attend a Mission Beach or Cassowary Coast callout?
We offer same-week service across Mission Beach, Tully, Innisfail, Kurrimine Beach, Cardwell, El Arish and Silkwood. Book online for the next available slot or call 0468 019 912.
Does a warm-blowing aircon mean I need a new unit?
Usually not. Most "no cool air" calls on the Cassowary Coast come down to a dirty coil, blocked filter, low gas or a failed capacitor — all repairable. Replacement is only recommended when the unit is over 10 years old, out of warranty, and the repair cost approaches half the price of a new install.
